Chapter 7 - The Uninvited Guest

The heavy iron gates swung open with a slow, grinding screech that broke the tense silence of the veranda. A sleek, matte-black town car rolled up the driveway, its headlights cutting through the darkness before clicking off entirely. The doors remained locked, and no one stepped out for several long, agonizing seconds.

Maya narrowed her eyes, sliding her phone into her coat pocket while keeping her hand close to her side. Eleanor shrank back against the glass doors, her breathing erratic and shallow.

"Did you call someone?" Maya demanded, turning to the older woman. "Is there another co-conspirator scheduled to arrive tonight?"

"No," Eleanor whispered, shaking her head frantically. "Everyone in our inner circle has either been arrested or has blocked our numbers. I swear to you, I didn't expect anyone else."

The rear door of the town car finally clicked open. A tall, impeccably dressed man in a charcoal overcoat stepped out into the crisp night air. He moved with deliberate, unhurried grace, adjusting his leather gloves before walking toward the front porch. As he stepped into the light of the entryway, Maya’s breath caught in her throat.

It was Victor Vance—Julian’s estranged uncle, a man rumored to have been exiled from the family empire twenty years ago after a bitter corporate war with Eleanor and her late husband.

Victor stopped at the base of the porch steps, looking up at the two women with an enigmatic, knowing smile. His silver-streaked hair and sharp facial features bore a striking resemblance to Julian, but his eyes carried an intelligence and cold calculation that Julian utterly lacked.

"Well, well," Victor spoke, his deep, resonant voice carrying effortlessly across the courtyard. "It appears I arrived just in time to witness the total collapse of my dear sister-in-law's carefully constructed empire."

Eleanor gasped, clutching her tweed blazer as if she were facing a specter. "Victor... you're dead. You were supposed to be dead in Europe."

"Discredited, disgraced, and driven out of the country—yes, Eleanor. But dead? Never underestimate a Vance when there's money left to be scavenged," Victor replied smoothly, climbing the steps one by one. He turned his attention directly to Maya, nodding respectfully. "And you must be Maya. The brilliant mind they thought they could use and discard."

Maya didn't lower her guard. She stood her ground, her royal blue dress framing a posture of absolute readiness. "You didn't come here just to reminisce, Victor. What do you want with the estate?"

Victor pulled a thick manila envelope from his overcoat and tossed it onto the glass table between them. "I didn't come for the house, Maya. I came to offer you the missing piece of the puzzle regarding Eleanor's offshore accounts—and the truth about what happened to your parents' company twenty-five years ago."
