Chapter 3 - The Audit Unveiled

Panic finally fractured the brittle atmosphere of the foyer. Julian lunged past Maya toward the wall-mounted intercom, frantically pressing the button to summon the estate staff, but only static answered him. The entire smart-home system had already locked them out, revoking their digital credentials with cold, algorithmic precision.

"Damn it!" Julian slammed his fist against the dry wall, leaving a small dent in the pristine white paint. He turned back, his eyes bloodshot and desperate. "Maya, let's be reasonable. We can settle this in private. We don't need lawyers, and we certainly don't need the authorities involved."

Maya adjusted the cuffs of her royal blue dress, watching him squirm with detached amusement. "Reasonable? Is that the word you whispered to Chloe while reviewing the corporate embezzlement files on my office desk?"

Chloe stepped forward, her blonde hair catching the chandelier light as she tried to defend her position. "Listen to me, Maya. You can't just throw us out like this. I have rights as—"

"As what? As Julian's mistress and co-conspirator?" Maya cut her off sharply, her voice slicing through the room like a scalpel. "Your name is on the shell company that received the unauthorized wire transfers from my personal accounts, Chloe. The federal investigators don't care about your red sequin dress."

Eleanor clutched her pearl necklace, her breath coming in shallow, ragged gasps. Her face turned an alarming shade of pale grey. "My family built this reputation. You cannot destroy us over a domestic dispute."

"This hasn't been a domestic dispute since Julian forged my signature on the asset transfer forms last month," Maya stated flatly. "You thought I was busy traveling for international acquisitions, completely unaware that my legal team was auditing every single cent flowing through your accounts."

Julian grabbed the black luxury suitcase, his knuckles white. "You planned this. From the very beginning."

"I simply prepared for the inevitable, Julian," Maya replied, turning toward the open front door. "You wanted me gone. Now, enjoy the silence of a house you can no longer afford to heat."

She stepped out onto the porch, leaving them trapped inside their own gilded cage as sirens began wailing faintly in the distance.
