Chapter 14 - The Tarmac Confrontation

The municipal airfield was bathed in the harsh, sodium-orange glow of high-intensity floodlights. A twin-engine private jet sat idling on the tarmac, its turbine engines whining softly against the cold night wind. A sleek black town car was parked directly at the base of the boarding stairs, its doors standing wide open.

Chloe stood near the doorway of the aircraft, wearing her striking red sequin dress under a heavy black winter coat, clutching a leather briefcase tightly against her chest. Her blonde hair whipped wildly across her face in the jet stream as she argued frantically with the pilot, who was gesturing impatiently toward the open cabin door.

A sleek federal sedan screeched to a halt twenty yards away, its headlights blinding the aircraft crew. The doors flew open, and Maya stepped out into the wind, her braided updo flawless, her posture radiating unbreakable confidence. Prosecutor Miller and two tactical agents emerged immediately behind her, their badges catching the orange glare of the floodlights.

"Stop right there, Chloe!" Miller’s voice cut sharply through the whine of the jet engines.

Chloe froze, her hand hovering over the aircraft handrail. She spun around, her face twisting into a mask of pure desperation as she saw Maya walking toward her across the asphalt.

"You're too late, Maya!" Chloe screamed over the roar of the turbines, holding up the leather briefcase. "The cryptographic keys are already uploaded to a secure cloud server in Zurich. You can't touch what's already gone global!"

Maya didn't break her stride. She walked right up to the base of the boarding stairs, stopping just out of arms' reach. She looked up at the younger woman with profound, icy calm.

"You always made the mistake of thinking technology is smarter than ownership, Chloe," Maya said clearly, her voice effortlessly carrying over the engine noise. "You uploaded the files, yes—but you forgot that the secondary routing node was tied to my corporate firewall."

Chloe’s expression flickered with sudden, genuine panic. "What are you talking about?"

"I'm talking about the fact that your cloud server was programmed to bounce back to the primary estate trust if the master decryption key wasn't verified within sixty seconds," Maya replied, pulling her phone from her coat pocket and tapping the screen. "Which it just was."

A sharp notification chime rang out simultaneously from inside Chloe's leather briefcase. Chloe dropped the case as if it had suddenly burst into flames, staring down at it in horror as the remote-lock indicator light flashed from green to a definitive, solid red.

Prosecutor Miller stepped up beside Maya, snapping the steel handcuffs onto Chloe's wrists before she could take another step toward the aircraft. "Chloe Andrews, you are under arrest for international cyber fraud and corporate espionage."

As Chloe was led away toward the federal sedan, her red sequin dress catching the amber floodlights one last time, Maya turned her gaze toward the horizon where the first pale streaks of dawn were beginning to break across the American sky.
