Chapter 6 - The Offshore Vault

The glowing screen of Maya’s smartphone displayed a string of encrypted financial ledgers that her legal team had just extracted from Julian’s primary offshore server. Her dark eyes scanned the figures under the amber glow of the veranda light. The numbers didn't just account for the corporate embezzlement she had already uncovered; they pointed to a much darker, systemic drainage of funds originating from an unfamiliar international trust.
Maya frowned, tapping the screen to expand the node network. The trust was registered in the Cayman Islands under a dormant corporate entity that bore her own maiden name—a name she hadn't used since before she met Julian. A cold realization washed over her, replacing her earlier sense of complete victory with a sharp spike of suspicion.
Footsteps echoed softly from behind her on the hardwood floor of the veranda. Eleanor stepped out into the night air, clutching her tweed blazer tightly around her shoulders. The older woman looked frail, stripped of the fierce arrogance that had defined her demeanor earlier that evening.
"The agents gave me permission to retrieve my medication from the master suite before I leave," Eleanor said quietly, her voice devoid of its usual venom. She hesitated, staring at Maya's back. "What else did you find on that phone? You look like you've seen a ghost."
Maya didn't turn around immediately. She let the silence stretch between them, weighing whether the aging matriarch had any knowledge of what was hidden in the digital vaults.
"Tell me about the Vance family trust established twenty-five years ago," Maya said without turning, her voice dangerously calm. "The one funded by my family's estate before the merger."
Eleanor stiffened, her breath catching audibly in the dark. She gripped the wooden railing of the veranda for support, her knuckles turning stark white. "That... that was settled decades ago. Julian had nothing to do with the initial capitalization."
"Julian didn't, but you did," Maya turned slowly, her gaze locking onto the older woman with piercing clarity. "The offshore account I just unlocked isn't draining Julian's stolen capital. It's actively siphoning the remaining trust principal into a private account controlled exclusively by you and a holding company in Zurich."
Eleanor’s face lost whatever color remained in it. She stumbled backward half a step, her eyes wide with undisguised terror. "You're... you're looking in places you shouldn't. That money was insurance. Protection for the family name in case things went south."
"Insurance? You call stealing my family's generational inheritance protection?" Maya stepped closer, her royal blue dress casting a commanding shadow. "You didn't just tolerate Julian's financial crimes, Eleanor. You engineered them from the shadows, using your son as a front while you emptied the vault."
May you like
Before Eleanor could muster a defense, the front security gate buzzed loudly, signaling the arrival of an unexpected vehicle that wasn't on the federal manifest.
