Chapter 13 - The Remote Wipe

The blue glow of the terminal monitor shifted to an aggressive, flashing red as the remote wipe protocol began eating away at the data partitions. Lines of code vanished from the screen faster than Miller could type, replaced by cascading blocks of encrypted garbage data.
"They're burning the entire ledger," Miller shouted, her fingers moving in a blur across the keyboard as she tried to isolate the local network from external interference. "If we don't sever the connection right now, every record of the original patent transfers and the embezzled funds will be permanently erased."
Maya didn't panic. Her mind raced back to the structural blueprints of the smart-home system she had helped finance three years ago. "There's a physical hard-line kill switch," she said urgently, pointing toward the heavy wooden baseboard beneath the mahogany desk. "Underneath the lower molding. Pull the manual circuit breaker!"
Without hesitation, Miller dropped to her knees, reaching beneath the desk and yanking hard on a heavy brass lever hidden behind the wiring harness.
A loud, metallic thunk echoed through the walls. The flashing red lights on the terminal instantly died, plunging the study into sudden, absolute darkness save for the emergency battery-backup lamps flickering softly in the corners.
On the screen, a frozen text prompt remained visible in the center of the dark display:
Transfer Interrupted at 99.4%. Partial Ledger Secured.
Miller stood up, wiping a bead of sweat from her forehead. "We caught the bulk of it. The primary patent portfolio and seventy percent of the liquid capital have been successfully secured under your trust, Ms. Sterling. But the final tracking logs identifying the exact physical location of the external terminal were wiped during the override."
Maya stared at the screen, her dark eyes narrowing with grim determination. "We don't need the logs to know who initiated the wipe. Only one other person had administrative root access to the estate's secondary subnet."
Eleanor raised her head slowly from the armchair, her voice trembling in the dim light. "Chloe... she installed the secondary maintenance router in the guest house three months ago under Julian's orders."
"And right now," Victor added, checking his luxury wristwatch with chilling precision, "she's probably boarding a private charter flight out of the municipal airfield downtown."
May you like
Maya turned on her heel, her royal blue dress swirling around her ankles as she walked decisively toward the study doors. "Not if we intercept her before she clears the tarmac."
