Chapter 4 - The Closing Net

The wail of approaching sirens grew louder, cutting through the quiet suburban night and shattering any remaining illusions of control inside the grand estate. Julian raced to the front window, parting the heavy silk drapes just enough to see two sleek black sedans pulling up past the automated gates. The red and blue flashing lights cast an eerie, rhythmic glow across the polished marble floor of the foyer.
"Federal agents," Julian muttered, backing away from the glass as if he had been burned. His chest rose and fell in rapid, shallow breaths. He looked wildly around the room, as if searching for a secret exit that didn't exist. "They're already here. How did they move this fast?"
Maya stood calmly on the exterior porch, her silhouette framed by the porch light against the dark night sky. She watched through the glass as Julian dissolved into a frantic state of denial and panic. Eleanor sank heavily onto the velvet entryway bench, clutching her tweed blazer around her shoulders as if she could ward off the chill of impending ruin.
Chloe began to cry softly, genuine terror replacing her earlier amused composure. "Julian, you said her legal team was incompetent! You said she wouldn't notice missing millions for at least a year!"
"Shut up!" Julian screamed, snapping at her with venomous hatred. "I didn't know she had internal access to the federal compliance database!"
Outside, Maya pulled her phone from her pocket and tapped the screen, authorizing the digital handshake that granted the federal investigators immediate access to the property's master control mainframe. The front smart-locks clicked open automatically, allowing the agents to step past Maya and into the foyer without encountering physical resistance.
The lead agent, a tall man in a crisp charcoal suit, held out a badge and a warrant toward Julian. "Julian Vance, you are under arrest for corporate fraud, wire embezzlement, and forgery. Anything you say can and will be used against you."
Julian backed away until the back of his legs hit the edge of the dining room table. "This is a mistake! My lawyer—"
"Your lawyer was arrested ten minutes ago at his downtown office," the agent interrupted smoothly, gesturing for his colleagues to move in.
Eleanor stood up, her voice trembling with aristocratic outrage. "Do you know who I am? You cannot touch this family!"
The agent didn't even glance her way. He simply motioned toward Chloe as well. "Miss Andrews, you'll need to come with us for questioning regarding the shell company transfers."

Maya watched the unfolding chaos from the doorway, her expression serene and unreadable. As Julian was forced into handcuffs, his eyes met hers one last time, filled with a mixture of hatred and absolute defeat.
