Chapter 11 - The Hidden Safe

The heavy oak front door swung open as Prosecutor Miller, Maya, and Victor stepped back inside the grand foyer. The federal agents had already cordoned off the lower level, but the upper-level executive suite remained untouched by the initial sweep. Eleanor followed them reluctantly, her posture broken, her footsteps heavy against the polished marble floor.
"The executive suite," Maya said, her eyes fixed on the grand staircase leading to the second floor. "Julian kept his private physical vault behind the mahogany bookcase in his study."
"It's not just Julian's vault," Victor corrected softly, walking beside her. "My brother installed that safe thirty years ago. It requires a dual-authorization biometric scan or a master cryptographic key that only a family bloodline member—or the legal owner of the estate—can activate."
They ascended the stairs in silence, the ambient hum of the smart-home cooling system providing an eerie backdrop to the high-stakes treasure hunt. Prosecutor Miller kept her hand near her radio, scanning the dim corridors for any unexpected security risks.
When they reached the double doors of the executive study, the brass handle was already cold to the touch. Maya pushed the door open, revealing a spacious room lined with dark wood paneling, leather armchairs, and a massive mahogany desk facing the floor-to-ceiling windows that overlooked the dark acreage outside.
"Over there," Maya pointed toward the far corner where a massive floor-to-ceiling bookcase stood filled with leather-bound legal volumes. "Julian always kept it locked behind the second row of corporate tax folios."
Prosecutor Miller stepped up to the bookcase, running her gloved fingers along the carved molding. "Is there a manual release, or are we going to need a tactical cutting torch?"
"Neither," Maya replied calmly. She stepped past the prosecutor, walking directly up to the center shelf. She reached out and pulled down three specific volumes in a precise sequence—the exact same sequence her father had taught her before his company was stolen from him decades ago.
With a deep, mechanical click, the entire bookcase slid sideways into the wall, revealing a heavy steel safe door inset with a digital keypad and a biometric glass scanner.
Eleanor gasped from the doorway, her hands flying to her mouth. "How... how do you know that combination? That was a secret known only to the founding partners!"
"Because my father helped design this house before your family cheated him out of his shares," Maya answered without looking back, her voice ringing with quiet authority. She pressed her thumb firmly against the glass scanner and entered the six-digit numerical code corresponding to the day her father's company was legally incorporated.
The steel door hissed as the internal vacuum seal released, swinging open to reveal rows of velvet-lined compartments containing encrypted hard drives, historical stock certificates, and a single, blinking black flash drive resting on a velvet pillow.

Prosecutor Miller reached inside and retrieved the flash drive, her expression tightening with grim satisfaction. "The master decryption key. Let's see where Chloe tried to hide the empire."
