Chapter 2 - The Hidden Signature

The air in the grand foyer instantly grew heavy, the triumphant laughter dying in Julian’s throat. He stared at the manila folder in Maya’s hand, his pupils constricting with sudden panic. Eleanor stepped closer, her sharp eyes narrowing as she tried to catch a glimpse of the papers. Chloe abandoned her wine glass in the dining room, her footsteps clicking rapidly against the marble as she hurried to join the tense circle.

"What is that?" Julian demanded, his voice dropping an octave as his mask of absolute confidence began to crack. "You're bluffing. You always pull these theatrical stunts when you lose."

Maya did not flinch. She maintained her proud, upright posture, her royal blue dress catching the warm light of the crystal chandelier overhead. She slid the top document out just enough for the notary stamp to catch the light.

"I don't bluff, Julian. I build empires," Maya said, her voice dripping with controlled fury. "You were so busy trying to orchestrate my public humiliation that you forgot to check who actually funded this estate when the market crashed two years ago."

Eleanor scoffed, stepping between her son and Maya. "Don't listen to her, Julian. She's a gold-digger trying to salvage her wounded ego. Call security and have her dragged off the property before I lose my temper."

"Security won't come, Eleanor," Maya replied smoothly, turning her gaze to the older woman. "In fact, if you look out the driveway right now, you’ll see that the guards answered to my corporate entity, not your allowance."

As if on cue, the heavy security gates at the end of the long driveway began to close automatically, locking with a definitive, metallic thud that reverberated through the silent night. Julian whipped his head around toward the large arched windows, his face draining of all color.

"What did you do?" Julian hissed, lunging forward to grab the folder, but Maya whipped it away with practiced agility.

Chloe gasped, clutching the sequin fabric of her dress. "Julian, what is she talking about? You told me everything was legally yours!"

Julian spun around, desperate to salvage his credibility in front of his mistress. "Shut up, Chloe! She's lying! It's all a forged document designed to stall!"

Maya stepped toward the door, leaving the black luxury suitcase untouched on the floor. She looked back at the three of them with profound pity.

"You have ten minutes to pack your things, Julian," Maya said quietly, echoing his earlier words with devastating irony. "Because at midnight, the federal audit begins."
