Chapter 8: The Sparrows Promise

Clara’s fingers hovered over the keyboard. She closed her eyes and recalled the sound of her father’s gentle, gravelly voice: *“No matter how big the storm gets, little sparrow, truth doesn't bend to the wind.”*
She typed rapidly: `TruthDoesNotBend1994`.
The screen flashed bright green.
*AUTHENTICATION ACCEPTED. DECRYPTING PRIMARY ARCHIVE...*
Lines of financial records, email chains, and audio recordings began populating the screen at blinding speed. Clara scrolled through the documents, her jaw slack with horror. Julian Sterling had not only knowingly cut corners on Harborview Towers, but he was also currently preparing to pour the foundation for a massive new public hospital using the exact same compromised supply chain and fraudulent engineering firms. The ground-breaking ceremony was scheduled for that very morning at 9:00 AM.
Hundreds of future patients, doctors, and families would be placed inside a death trap all to maximize the profit margins of the Sterling Development Group.
Suddenly, her phone vibrated. A video call request popped up from Marcus’s number.
Clara accepted the call with hesitation.
The screen flickered to life. It wasn't Marcus holding the phone. It was Julian Sterling, sitting in the luxurious leather back seat of his private town car, sipping water from a crystal tumbler. Marcus sat beside him, handcuffed, his face bruised and bleeding.

“Good morning, Clara,” Julian purred, his voice smooth and devoid of humanity. “You have two hours to bring that laptop to the hospital construction site. If you go to the police, Marcus dies. If you run, I will hunt you and that little girl to the ends of the earth.”
