Chapter 4: The Safe Haven

The neon sign of the diner flickered with a tired, buzzing red hum against the foggy midnight air. Clara pulled into the dark rear alley, cutting her engine and lights instantly. She quickly bundled Lily into an oversized winter coat, holding her against her chest as she slipped through the restaurant's metal kitchen door.

Inside, the warm smell of fried onions and stale coffee offered a grounding comfort. Sitting in a corner vinyl booth, half-shrouded by the low glow of a pendant lamp, was Marcus Sterling.

Marcus was thirty-five, his face lined with quiet sorrow that sharply contrasted with his younger brother Julian’s arrogant charm. Marcus wore a rumpled linen shirt, his jacket discarded beside him.

“Sit down, Clara. Please,” Marcus said softly, sliding a mug of hot chocolate toward the booth for Lily.

Clara sat down, her muscles coiled like a spring. She kept Lily nestled securely on the vinyl seat beside her.

“You put my daughter in danger, Marcus,” Clara hissed, her voice sharp with maternal fury. “You used a little girl to steal from your brother?”

Marcus looked down at his calloused hands, shame washing over his features. “I didn't plan for Lily to be involved. My informant inside the company panicked when Julian’s men closed in. She saw Lily near the terrace and made a split-second, desperate choice to hide the card on her.”

“What is on this card that is worth terrorizing a child?” Clara demanded, placing the tiny black chip on the laminate table between them.

Marcus leaned forward, his voice barely louder than a breath. “Evidence that Julian orchestrated the collapse of the city’s subsidized housing project three years ago—the very foundation that cost twelve lives, including your father’s.”
