Chapter 14: The Stolen Ribbon

Clara carefully cut open the evidence bag. Inside was Lily’s white satin ribbon, washed and neatly pressed, alongside a small, framed photograph that the police had recovered from her father’s old impounded locker at the municipal archives.

The photo showed Thomas Vance in his orange safety vest, holding a seven-year-old Clara on his shoulders in front of a newly completed public library. On the back, in faded blue ink, were the words: *Build things that last. Protect those who cannot.*

Clara traced the handwriting with her thumb, feeling a deep, long-standing knot in her chest finally dissolve into tears of pure relief and peace.

Later that afternoon, Clara arrived at Sarah’s sister’s home. When the front door opened, Lily ran across the hardwood floor with her arms wide open, squealing with pure joy.

“Mommy! Mommy!”

Clara scooped her daughter up, holding her so tightly that she could feel the steady, joyful rhythm of the little girl’s heartbeat. Lily buried her face in Clara’s neck, giggling as Clara showered her cheeks with kisses.

“Is everything okay now, Mommy? Did the bad men go away?” Lily asked, tilting her head with innocent curiosity.

“Yes, my love,” Clara whispered, her voice thick with emotion. “They’re gone. And they are never, ever coming back.”
