Chapter 2: The Whispers of Greed

The humid night air offered a harsh shock after the air-conditioned perfection of the Sterling manor. Clara buckled Lily into the back seat of her beaten-down sedan, smoothing her daughter’s messy blonde curls until the girl’s ragged sobs gave way to exhausted, quiet hiccups.

“I didn't take the shiny thing, Mommy,” Lily whispered, her eyelashes clumped with wet tears. “I was just looking at the flowers on the table.”

“I know, sweetie. I believe you. You are good, and you are brave,” Clara whispered, kissing her forehead.

Clara got behind the wheel, her hands shaking violently against the worn steering wheel. Her mind raced back through the fragmented memories of the night. She had only attended the charity gala because her former employer, Marcus Sterling—Julian’s older, estranged brother—had invited her to cater the artisanal pastry station. It was an honest job that promised three months’ worth of rent.

Julian had deliberately planted the platinum family heirloom in Lily’s small cloth purse near the buffet, only to publicly humiliate them when the alarm was raised. But why target a five-year-old child? Why orchestrate a public scene with such dramatic cruelty?

Clara pulled out her phone. A single unread text sat on her cracked screen from an unknown number:

*Check Lily’s hair ribbon. Don't go back to your apartment tonight.*

A chill spiked through Clara's veins. She turned around to look at the sleeping girl in the rearview mirror. Tied into Lily's blonde locks was a simple white satin ribbon—a ribbon that had come undone when she fell on the marble floor and had been hastily retied by someone in the chaotic crowd.

Clara pulled over beneath the harsh yellow beam of a streetlamp, her pulse drumming against her ears.
