Chapter 13: Rebuilding from the Ashes

Twenty-four hours later, the headlines across the nation read like an earthquake in the financial and political worlds:

*BILLIONAIRE JULIAN STERLING INDICTED ON FEDERAL CHARGES: HARBORVIEW TRAGEDY EXPOSED.*
*CITY CANCELS COMPROMISED HOSPITAL CONTRACT; NEW SAFETY PROBE LAUNCHED.*
*LATE INSPECTOR THOMAS VANCE POSTHUMOUSLY EXONERATED WITH FULL HONORS.*

Inside a quiet hospital room downtown, Marcus sat propped up on clean white pillows, his injuries treated and bandaged. Clara sat in an armchair beside the window, watching the morning sun illuminate the city skyline with a fresh, clean light.

Marcus looked at her, his expression filled with profound humility. “The Sterling family trust has been placed into federal receivership. But my father’s personal estate—the legitimate holdings—will be used to establish a compensation fund for the Harborview victims’ families. Starting with your family, Clara.”

Clara shook her head gently. “I don't want a fortune, Marcus. I just wanted my father’s name cleared, and a safe world for Lily.”

“You’ll have both,” Marcus insisted. “And you’ll have the resources to open that bakery you always dreamed of. No one will ever look down on you or your daughter again.”

A soft knock sounded at the door. Detective Ramos stepped in, holding a brown paper package sealed with an official evidence tag.

“Thought you might want this back, Clara,” Ramos smiled, placing the package on Clara's lap.
