Chapter 5: Unearthing the Past
The diner’s refrigerator hummed loudly as Marcus’s words sank into Clara’s consciousness. Her father, Thomas Vance, had been a chief safety inspector who died in a sudden structural collapse at the Harborview Towers development. The official investigation had ruled it an accidental negligence on Thomas’s part, a smear campaign that had ruined the Vance family name and left Clara penniless.
“Julian bought the city inspectors,” Marcus explained, his eyes burning with quiet rage. “He substituted substandard steel to pocket forty million dollars from the municipal fund. When your father refused to sign off on the safety permits, Julian had the foundation compromised prematurely to silence him and stage it as an inspector error.”
Clara felt the room spin. The man who had just insulted her daughter on a ballroom floor had murdered her father to build his empire.
“Why didn't you go to the authorities?” Clara asked, fighting back the rising nausea.
“Because Julian controls the district attorney’s office and half the precinct chiefs,” Marcus said, pulling a ruggedized laptop from his leather satchel. “This memory card contains the encrypted bank transfers, the encrypted audio logs, and the original, un-doctored structural blueprints. But it requires a dual-key decryption sequence.”
“And who holds the keys?” Clara asked.
“I have one,” Marcus replied, sliding the card into a reader attached to the laptop. “The other was set by the chief engineer before he fled the country. He used a biometric passphrase tied to the only person he trusted—your father. And through your father’s estate records, that key defaults to his next of kin. You, Clara.”
