Chapter 10: The Groundbreaking Ceremony

The morning sun rose through a thick layer of industrial smog, casting an amber glow over the sprawling construction site of the new Metro Central Hospital. White celebration tents, press risers, and heavy earth-moving equipment framed the perimeter.

Journalists, city officials, and television cameras were already gathering near the podium, eager to cover the high-profile civic development project spearheaded by the philanthropic Sterling Group.

Behind the grand stage, inside an unfinished concrete sub-level, Julian stood beside two armed security guards. Marcus sat bound to a steel girder, his breathing labored.

The heavy wooden door at the edge of the sub-level creaked open.

Clara walked in alone, holding the ruggedized black laptop case by its handle. She had left Lily in the safe, protected custody of Sarah Ramos’s trusted sister three miles away. For the first time in years, Clara was not running. Her head was held high, her posture commanding and fearless.

Julian smiled, smoothing the lapel of his tailored charcoal suit. “Prompt. Reliable. I always admired your work ethic, Clara, even when you were just scrubbing tables at my father’s club.”

“Let Marcus go, Julian,” Clara said, stopping ten yards away on the bare concrete. “The files are here. Everything you wanted destroyed.”

“You see, Clara, that’s where you misunderstand power,” Julian murmured, gesturing to Keller, who drew a silenced pistol from beneath his coat. “I don't just destroy evidence. I destroy loose ends.”
