Chapter 3: The Secret in the Satin

With trembling fingers, Clara reached into the back seat and gently untied the white ribbon from Lily’s hair. Lily stirred lightly, mumbling in her sleep before rolling over against the plush car seat.
Clara held the fabric under the dashboard light. The satin felt heavier than ordinary ribbon. Near the folded edge of the bow, the seam was sewn with uneven, coarse thread. Using a small pair of nail scissors from her glove compartment, she carefully snipped the stitching.
Out slipped an ultra-thin, black micro-SD card, smaller than a fingernail.
Clara stared at it in disbelief. Someone had used her daughter as a courier. During the commotion when Lily tripped—or was deliberately tripped—someone had slipped this into the girl's ribbon while pretending to check on her.
Her phone buzzed again. The same unknown number.
*He saw you find it. Drive to the 24-hour diner on 4th and Elm. Use the service alley. Julian’s security team has your apartment staked out.*
Clara threw the car into gear, tires screeching against the asphalt. Her heart pounded a frantic rhythm. She realized now that the theft accusation wasn't just Julian's petty cruelty; it was a desperate cover-up. Julian had likely discovered that sensitive information had been compromised at the party and used the public theft scene to initiate a search of everyone present—especially those who didn't belong to the inner circle.

Clara navigated the dimly lit backstreets of the industrial district, glancing continuously at her mirrors. Two blocks behind her, a set of high-beam headlights shadowed her every turn, keeping a predatory distance.
