Chapter 8: The Aftermath

Within forty-eight hours, the news of Apex Group’s collapse swept through the financial district. Richard Thorne faced multiple investigations for fraud and reckless leverage. The high-society friends who once toasted his success vanished overnight.
Julian, meanwhile, spent his afternoon at the community center in rolled-up sleeves, helping paint the newly renovated tutoring rooms. He laughed with the kids, carried boxes of new books, and ate simple cheese sandwiches with the volunteers.
Arthur Vance arrived around three o'clock, carrying a fresh stack of documents.
"The deed has been transferred, Julian," Vance reported, watching his boss wipe paint splatters from his hands. "The property is now permanently placed in a non-profit trust under your mother's name. No developer can ever touch it again."
"Thank you, Arthur," Julian smiled, looking around at the bright, colorful walls. "This is where real progress happens. One child, one meal, one safe space at a time."
"There is someone outside asking to speak with you," Vance added quietly. "She's been waiting by the gates for two hours."
Julian looked through the window and saw Elena standing under the shade of an old oak tree. Gone were the sparkling gown, the expensive jewels, and the arrogant smirk. She wore a simple trench coat and looked worn down by the sudden storm of reality.

Julian sighed softly, wiped his hands on a rag, and stepped out into the courtyard.
