Chapter 3: An Unspoken Vow

Inside the quiet sanctuary of the top-floor office, Vance poured a glass of sparkling water and set it on the mahogany desk.
"Forgive the public spectacle, Julian," Vance apologized softly. "I know how much you value your privacy."
"It's fine, Arthur," Julian replied, looking out over the glittering city skyline. "People see what the world teaches them to see. Price tags, brand names, and superficial power."
"The foundation's audit is complete," Vance continued, sliding a thick blue folder across the table. "Over fifty million dollars was distributed to public children's hospitals and community clinics this quarter alone. Exactly as your mother wished."
Julian’s gaze softened. His mother, Mary Sterling, had worked two janitorial shifts a day to pay for his engineering textbooks. She had died in a crowded, underfunded county hospital hallway while wealthy executives bypassed the waiting lines. That day, Julian vowed that if he ever accumulated wealth, it would never be used for vanity—it would serve as a quiet shield for those who had none.
"And what about the East River Community Center?" Julian asked.
"Facing foreclosure, sir," Vance said solemnly. "A real estate consortium called Apex Group is buying up the entire block to build luxury condos. The children and elderly residents have two weeks before eviction."
Julian flipped the file open. The lead partner at Apex Group was none other than Richard Thorne—Elena’s wealthy new fiancé.

"We cannot let that happen," Julian said, his voice hardening with purpose. "Find out what Apex needs to back off. If they want a fight, we give them one."
