Chapter 13: A Test of Character

A year later, the City Commerce Council hosted its annual Charity Gala at the grand metropolitan hotel. It was the premier event of the season, where billionaires gathered to compete over who could donate the largest check for social prestige.
Julian arrived alone, wearing a neat, understated charcoal suit without flashy accessories. He walked into the ballroom without an entourage, taking a seat at a quiet corner table.
Midway through the evening, the master of ceremonies took the podium to announce the winner of the Philanthropist of the Year award.
"Ladies and gentlemen," the speaker announced, "this year's honor goes to a man whose foundations have built twenty community centers, funded three pediatric cancer wards, and forgiven over ten million dollars in medical debt across our state."
The spotlight swung across the grand room, bypassing the front tables crowded with eager executives, and landed squarely on Julian Sterling.
The room gasped as people recognized the quiet billionaire who rarely appeared at society parties. The applause started hesitantly, then swelled into a standing ovation.
