Chapter 4: The Golden Cage

Across town, in an opulent penthouse overlooking the river, Elena sat in front of her vanity, staring at her own reflection. Her hands trembled as she removed her diamond earrings.
The door slammed open, and Richard Thorne walked in, loosening his silk tie. He was handsome in a sharp, predatory way, but his face was darkened with rage.
"Who was that guy in the showroom, Elena?" Richard demanded, tossing his jacket onto the plush sofa. "Every business partner on my contact list is calling me. They say Sterling humiliated you—and by extension, me."
"I didn't know, Richard!" Elena cried out, turning around. "He never told me! When we dated, he lived in a studio apartment and wore twenty-dollar shoes!"
"Because he's smart," Richard snapped, pouring himself a bourbon. "He doesn't need flash. Meanwhile, I'm leveraged up to my neck trying to close the East River land deal, and Sterling-Vance holds fifty percent of our bank's debt."
Elena felt the ground crumbling beneath her feet. She had traded love, loyalty, and Julian's quiet warmth for a life of luxury and status. Now, she realized that Richard's empire was built on fragile debt and ruthless vanity.
"Can't you just talk to him?" Elena suggested weakly. "Maybe make peace?"
May you like
"Peace?" Richard laughed bitterly. "In business, you don't make peace with a giant. You either outmaneuver him or get crushed. I'm going to demolish that East River center tomorrow morning. Once the ground is broken, his foundation won't be able to stop the construction."
