Chapter 11: The Secret Patron

Six months passed, and the city moved on as it always did. The scandalous fall of Apex Group faded from the headlines, replaced by new corporate gossip.
Yet, throughout the working-class neighborhoods, quiet miracles were taking place. Crumbling school libraries received anonymous shipments of new computers. Struggling free clinics received state-of-the-art medical equipment. Youth sports leagues found their fees completely paid for the year.
The benefactor was always listed simply as *"The Mary Sterling Memorial Fund."*
Julian continued to live in his modest brownstone apartment on the edge of the city. He still drove his reliable older sedan and wore comfortable cotton shirts. On weekends, he could often be found coaching youth soccer in the park or helping out at local food drives.
One evening, Arthur Vance visited Julian’s apartment with a small wooden box.
"A package arrived at the headquarters today, marked personal for you," Vance said, placing the box on the wooden dining table.
Julian opened the latch. Inside was a hand-knitted wool scarf in deep navy blue, accompanied by a handwritten letter on simple stationery.
