Chapter 9 - The Cold Cell

The steel door of the holding cell slammed shut with a heavy, vibrating clang that rattled the concrete walls of the federal processing center. Julian stood in the center of the cramped, windowless room, his tailored black suit now rumpled and stained with warehouse dust, his black tie hanging loosely around his open collar.

He gripped the vertical metal bars of the door, staring out into the sterile, fluorescent-lit hallway where a lone guard sat behind a glass partition. The silence of the cell block was suffocating, punctuated only by the dripping of a leaky pipe somewhere down the hall.

His phone, his watch, and his keys were gone—locked away in an evidence bag downstairs. Without them, he felt utterly untethered from reality, floating in a vacuum where time refused to move forward.

A shadow fell across the concrete floor outside his cell. Julian looked up, expecting to see the intake officer or perhaps a court-appointed defense attorney with bad news about his bail hearing.

Instead, Clara stepped into view, holding a small manila folder against her chest. She didn't look angry anymore; her expression was a mix of profound fatigue and lingering sorrow.

"They denied your bail, Julian," Clara said softly, her voice muffled slightly by the thick steel bars. "Elena's legal team filed an emergency injunction citing immediate flight risk due to your offshore accounts in Zurich."

Julian pressed his forehead against the cold metal bars, letting out a ragged sigh. "Where is she, Clara? What is she planning to do with the company?"

"She's dismantling it," Clara replied plainly. "Every subsidiary, every regional office, every asset you acquired over the past decade is being liquidated and transferred back into a charitable trust bearing our grandfather's name. You aren't just going to prison, Julian. You're going to leave with nothing."

Julian raised his head, his dark eyes burning with a desperate intensity. "And Marcus? Where is my partner in all of this? Is he hiding, or did she turn on him too?"

Clara hesitated for a fraction of a second, her eyes darting away from his gaze before she reached into her folder and pulled out a single photograph, sliding it across the concrete floor toward his shoes.

Julian dropped to his knees, snatching the photograph up from the dusty floor, and felt his breath stop entirely in his throat.
