Chapter 13 - The Final Ringing

The sharp ringing of the cell phone cut through the solemn air of the federal courtroom like a razor blade. Bailiffs paused halfway across the checkerboard floor, their hands hovering over their holsters as Judge Harrison frowned down from the bench, annoyed by the breach of protocol.

"Silence that device immediately," Judge Harrison commanded, banging his gavel once more.

One of the marshals rushed to the evidence tray, lifting the plastic bag and staring at the glowing screen. He glanced up nervously at the judge, then across the room toward Elena, before holding the phone up so everyone could see the incoming caller ID.

The screen flashed a single word: Marcus.

Julian stood frozen between his public defenders, his eyes locked on the glowing screen. Elena didn't flinch; she simply stood beside her chair, her black blazer dress absorbing the courtroom light as she watched the phone with a cold, detached curiosity.

"Answer it," Judge Harrison instructed quietly, his tone carrying an unexpected weight of morbid intrigue. "Put it on speaker."

The marshal pressed the green button, sliding his thumb across the screen before placing the device down onto the center of the defense table.

"Julian? Are you there?" Marcus’s voice crackled through the tiny speaker, sounding tinny and rushed against the background roar of jet engines. "I'm at the airstrip in Maine. The plane is fueled, but Sarah hasn't boarded yet. Tell me you executed the transfer protocols before the marshals picked you up."

The courtroom fell into an absolute, breathless silence. Every eye in the room shifted slowly from the phone on the table to Elena, who stood motionless by the prosecution desk, her expression remaining entirely unreadable.

Julian stared at her across the wooden barrier, a strange, hollow laugh escaping his lips. "She's not coming, Marcus. She never intended to get on that plane with you."

The speaker hissed with static for several long seconds before Marcus’s voice returned, laced with sudden, frantic panic. "What are you talking about? We planned this for three years. The accounts are in her name too!"

"Not anymore," Elena spoke for the first time, her voice cutting through the courtroom with crystal clarity as she stepped forward and picked up the phone.

"Sarah?" Marcus yelled through the speaker, the sound of wind whistling violently around his end of the line. "What did you do? Why are the transfer keys failing?"

"You were a very useful tool, Marcus," Elena said calmly into the phone, her tone as steady as if she were discussing the weather. "Just like Julian. But my family's estate was never meant to be split between conspirators."

She pressed the red end-call button with her thumb, plunging the courtroom back into absolute silence before sliding the phone across the table toward the marshals.
