Chapter 7 - The Unforgiving Ledger

Julian flinched backward from her touch, swatting her hand away as if it carried a burning coal. The heavy silence of the warehouse pressed down on them, broken only by the rhythmic crashing of the dark waves against the wooden pilings outside.
"You planned this from the very beginning," Julian said, his voice trembling with a mixture of rage and profound exhaustion. "The marriage, the penthouse, the company shares—it was all an elaborate trap designed to lure me into a false sense of security."
Elena let her hand drop back to her side, her expression hardening into absolute glass. "A trap implies you were an unwilling victim, Julian. You walked into my life because you thought you had conquered my family's legacy. I merely provided the canvas and let you paint your own destruction."
She turned back to the mahogany desk, picking up a thick leather-bound ledger with water-damaged edges. She flipped it open to a yellowed page covered in dense, handwritten arithmetic.
"Do you recognize this handwriting?" she asked, holding the page out toward him.
Julian stepped forward cautiously, squinting in the dim light. The ink was faded, but the distinct slanting loops belonged indisputably to his late business mentor, Arthur Vance—the man who had supposedly left him the company in his final will and testament.
"Arthur wrote that on the night he died," Julian murmured, a cold chill running down his spine. "That's his private asset inventory."
"It's his confession," Elena corrected sharply. "And your execution order. Arthur didn't leave you the company out of kindness, Julian. He transferred it to you under duress while you held his medication hostage in exchange for his signature. My father spent his final months documenting every single extortion attempt in this exact book."
Julian staggered back against a stack of wooden crates, the air feeling suddenly thin and toxic. "That's a lie. Arthur and I were partners. We built the firm together from the ground up."
"You built nothing," Elena said, her voice cutting through the gloom like a scalpel. "You scavenged. And tonight, the scavengers finally pay the price."

Before Julian could process the full weight of her words, the heavy metal entrance door of the warehouse slammed open behind him, crashing against the interior wall with a deafening bang.
