Chapter 5 - The Manila Envelope

Julian’s fingers brushed against the rough paper of the manila envelope resting on the hood of his sedan. The parking garage was dead silent except for the low hum of the ventilation system overhead. He broke the red wax seal—a crest he hadn't seen since his college fraternity days—and pulled out a stack of heavy parchment documents.
The top page was a certified death certificate dated six years ago, bearing a photograph of a woman who looked strikingly, hauntingly like Elena, right down to the shape of her jaw and the distinct sweep of her dark hair.
Julian’s breath hitched. "This... this is impossible. This is Catherine. She died in that boating accident off the coast of Maine."
"No," Clara corrected quietly, leaning against the cold concrete pillar. "Catherine didn't die. Elena died that night—or rather, the identity of Elena Vance was legally terminated when your company's insurance payout cleared. The woman you married, the woman who shares your bed and wears your mother's pearls, is Catherine’s twin sister, Sarah."
Julian stumbled back against the car door, the heavy metal biting into his spine. "That's insane. Twins? Elena never mentioned a sister. She always said she was an only child."
"Of course she didn't," Clara said, stepping closer into the light. "Because you were the one who signed off on the liability waiver for Catherine's medical transport right after the accident. You thought you were silencing a witness to your company's early environmental dumping violations. Instead, you invited her sister right into your penthouse."
Julian stared at the documents, the timeline of his life fracturing into jagged, incomprehensible pieces. Every tender moment, every quiet evening sharing wine on the balcony, every smile beneath the chandelier—recast instantly as an elaborate, patient act of vengeance.
"She's going to destroy everything," Julian whispered, the fight finally draining out of his voice.
"She already has," Clara said, tapping her watch. "And you have exactly ten minutes before the federal marshals arrive to arrest you for corporate fraud and identity theft."

Julian looked up from the papers, his eyes wide with desperate realization. "Where is she now?"
