Chapter 10 - The Missing Partner

The photograph showed Marcus standing outside a small airport hangar in Maine, holding a duffel bag stuffed with cash, flanked by two armed men in dark suits. But it wasn't Marcus’s presence at the airfield that made Julian's stomach drop; it was the woman standing directly behind him, holding a set of keys to a private twin-engine jet.
It was Elena—or Sarah—smiling warmly as she handed Marcus a fresh passport bearing a completely new name.
Julian’s fingers crumpled the glossy paper as he stared through the bars at Clara, his voice dropping to a harsh, disbelieving whisper. "Marcus didn't betray me under duress. He was working with her all along."
Clara nodded slowly, her eyes reflecting the cold fluorescent glare of the hallway. "They never stopped working together, Julian. Marcus was our family's accountant long before you ever hired him out of business school. He was the one who helped smuggle the ledger out of our estate when you took over the firm."
Julian shook his head, the betrayal hitting him harder than the loss of his company, his money, or his freedom. "That's impossible. Marcus and I built every contract together. He wept when we signed the merger."
"He was weeping because he knew how long it would take to lure you into the trap," Clara corrected, stepping closer to the bars. "They needed you to build the empire up to its peak valuation so that the forfeiture would be absolute. Every million you laundered, every offshore account you opened—Marcus set up the routing numbers to lead straight back to your personal signature."
Julian stood up slowly, gripping the cold iron bars until his knuckles ached. "She didn't just want revenge. She wanted complete, total annihilation."
"She wanted justice, Julian—her version of it," Clara said, turning toward the exit of the cell block. "And as of ten minutes ago, the federal prosecutor received a new package from Marcus's legal team containing your signature on every single fraudulent wire transfer."
Before Julian could call out to her, the heavy metal door at the end of the hall swung open, and two guards marched in, their faces expressionless as they unlocked his cell door.

"Move," the guard ordered, grabbing Julian roughly by the shoulder. "Your emergency arraignment has been moved up to midnight."
