Chapter 11 - The Midnight Courtroom

The federal courtroom was vast, dimly lit, and smelled faintly of old paper and floor wax. The high mahogany judge's bench towered over the empty oak benches, casting long, solemn shadows across the checkerboard marble floor. Julian sat at the defense table between two public defenders who hadn't even bothered to learn his middle name, their briefcases resting open and largely empty before them.
At the prosecution table across the aisle sat a single attorney, flanked not by co-counsel, but by Elena herself. She wore a sharp black wool coat over her black blazer dress, her pearls catching the amber glow of the wall sconces as she calmly reviewed a leather-bound folio.
The heavy oak doors at the back of the courtroom swung open, and Judge Harrison entered, his black robes sweeping behind him as he took his seat with a heavy thud of his gavel.
"We are convened in the matter of United States versus Julian Vance," Judge Harrison announced, his voice echoing off the high vaulted ceiling. "The court has reviewed the supplementary filings submitted by the prosecution regarding asset forfeiture and conspiracy charges."
Julian’s lead public defender stood up, buttoning his suit jacket nervously. "Your Honor, we move for a dismissal based on lack of direct physical evidence linking our client to the initial offshore wire transfers from twenty-eighteen."
Before the judge could respond, Elena stood up from the prosecution table, her movements slow, deliberate, and entirely unhurried. She walked toward the center of the well, holding a single flash drive in her gloved hand.
"The defense is operating under outdated assumptions, Your Honor," Elena said, her voice clear, resonant, and carrying absolute authority across the silent courtroom. "With the court's permission, I am submitting the complete, unencrypted keystroke logs recovered from the defendant’s private server this evening."
Judge Harrison leaned forward, adjusting his reading glasses. "And who authorized you to submit evidence on behalf of the prosecution, Mrs. Vance?"
Elena turned slightly, looking directly toward Julian with a gaze devoid of emotion. "As the primary court-appointed receiver of the Vance Holding Corporation and the sole surviving heir to the estate from which these funds were originally embezzled, I am acting as co-counsel for the federal interest."
Julian tried to stand, but his defense attorney yanked him back down by his sleeve, hissing under his breath, "Sit down, Mr. Vance, or I'll let them throw you in contempt."
Elena stepped closer to the judge’s bench, placing the flash drive onto the mahogany wood while keeping her eyes locked onto Julian’s face.
"Furthermore, Your Honor," Elena continued smoothly, "we have just received confirmation that the defendant's primary Swiss account has been fully liquidated and transferred to the federal restitution fund."

Julian froze, his heart dropping into his stomach as he realized the terrifying implication of her words.
