Chapter 8 - The Arrival of the Federal Marshals

Three figures stepped through the open doorway, their dark tactical vests emblazoned with yellow federal insignia under the harsh glow of flashlights. The lead marshal, a tall man with a stern, weathered face, scanned the cavernous room before locking his eyes directly onto Julian.
"Julian Vance?" the marshal called out, his hand resting casually near the sidearm strapped to his hip. "Step away from the desk, hands where we can see them."
Julian turned around slowly, lifting his hands in a gesture of absolute defeat. He looked past the marshals toward the open doorway, where a sleek black SUV sat idling in the rain, its red tail lights glowing like dying embers in the dark.
"You called them," Julian whispered without turning around, knowing full well who had orchestrated the timing down to the exact second.
Elena remained seated behind the mahogany desk, closing the leather-bound ledger with a soft, definitive thud. "I didn't call them, Julian. I simply forwarded the decrypted asset logs to the Department of Justice's financial crimes unit. They move very quickly when five million dollars in illicit offshore transfers are flagged in a single afternoon."
The marshals closed the distance between them, heavy boots crunching against the dusty floorboards. Two pairs of cold steel handcuffs locked securely around Julian’s wrists, the metal biting into his skin as they pulled his arms behind his back.
"You have the right to remain silent," the lead marshal recited in a low, mechanical monotone as they guided him toward the exit. "Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law."
As they passed the desk, Julian twisted his head to look at Elena one last time. She hadn't stood up. She sat in the dim light of the work lamp, calmly slipping her gold credit card back into her Chanel handbag just as she had done at the restaurant hours earlier.
"It's not over," Julian strained against the cuffs, his voice echoing off the corrugated tin walls. "The assets are tied up in corporate trusts. You can't touch them without my signature."
May you like
Elena offered him a final, devastating smile, lifting the gold card between two fingers. "Trusts can be dissolved, Julian. Especially when the sole beneficiary is legally dead."
