Chapter 1 - The Broken Custom

Julian stared at the leather bill folder resting on the white tablecloth, his jaw tightening just enough to pull the dark hairs of his beard against his collar. Across the table, Elena slid her gold credit card into the wireless terminal with a practiced, fluid motion that felt entirely too rehearsed. The restaurant hummed with quiet wealth, but the silence between them carried the weight of a shattered decade.

"Shall we split it?" Julian asked, his voice low and devoid of its usual warmth, though he already knew the answer.

Elena pulled her hand back, the pearls at her ears catching the amber candlelight as she gracefully slipped the card into her black Chanel handbag. She stood up, smoothing the front of her black blazer dress with deliberate slowness.

"Dinner was lovely," Elena said, her tone cool and untouchable, completely ignoring his offer to share the burden of the meal.

Julian remained seated, looking up at her with a gaze that cut through her practiced composure. "You didn't answer my question, Elena. And you haven't answered my calls in three days."

"There is nothing to discuss," she replied, her voice dropping an octave as she leaned in slightly. "You wanted transparency, Julian? You funded your little corporate expansion with accounts that don't belong to you. I saw the transfer logs this morning."

Julian’s chest tightened, the air suddenly turning cold despite the restaurant’s climate control. He forced himself not to stand, keeping his hands flat against the mahogany table. "Those logs were sealed under a federal compliance order. How did you get access to them?"

Elena offered a faint, humorless smile that didn't reach her eyes. "You always underestimated who I kept as friends, Julian. I didn't just pay for our anniversary dinner tonight. I just bought out your entire remaining equity stake."

Julian stared at her, the blood draining from his face as the reality of her words crashed over him. Before he could utter a single word in defense, Elena turned on her heel and walked away.
