Chapter 8 - The Back Door

Marcus froze halfway to the first step, his hand resting on the polished banister. The sharp, urgent pounding at the kitchen’s glass sliding door broke the tense silence of the house. Elena turned her head sharply toward the dark hallway, her heart pounding against her ribs like a trapped bird.

"Who could that be?" Elena asked, her voice tight with suspicion. "The federal agents already secured the front."

Marcus’s calm facade flickered for a fraction of a second, replaced by a sudden, sharp wariness. He pulled his hand off the banister and took a cautious step back toward the center of the living room.

"Stay here," Marcus ordered, though his voice lacked its previous authoritative edge.

Before Elena could move, the glass of the back patio door shattered with a loud, brittle crash. Shards of glass rained onto the kitchen floor. Heavy footsteps rushed down the short hallway, and a figure burst into the living room, panting heavily. It wasn't a federal agent, nor was it a police officer. It was a young man in his late twenties, dressed in a mud-splattered courier jacket, holding a shattered laptop in his hands.

Elena gasped, stepping back against the wall. "Who are you? What are you doing in my house?"

The young man ignored her, his eyes darting frantically around the room until they locked onto Marcus. A vicious, triumphant grin spread across the intruder’s face.

"Found you, asshole," the young man snarled, taking a threatening step forward.

Marcus instinctively reached into his pocket, but before his hand could find his phone, the courier lunged forward, slamming Marcus against the mahogany bookshelf. Books tumbled to the floor in a chaotic avalanche.

"You think you could wipe the server and leave me holding the bag for your corporate shell companies?" the intruder yelled, grabbing Marcus by the collar of his gray knit sweater. "I’m taking everything back!"

Elena stood frozen, watching the sudden violence unfold with absolute bewilderment. "Marcus... who is this? What is he talking about?"

Marcus struggled against the man's grip, his face flushing dark red as he gasped for air. "He's... he's just an unhinged former employee, Elena. Don't listen to him—"

"Liar!" the courier shouted, cutting Marcus off as he pulled a small, silver flash drive out of his pocket and held it up like a weapon. "I’m the financial architect who built every single one of your offshore shell accounts. And I have the master encryption keys to your actual personal fortune right here in my hand."
