Chapter 4 - The Stolen Ledger

The courier did not wait for a second invitation; he turned on his heel and slipped out the front door, pulling it shut with a heavy, final thud. Eleanor stood frozen under the entryway light, the government-stamped documents trembling slightly in her gloved fingers. For the first time all evening, the iron-willed military veteran looked genuinely cornered.
Elena stepped forward, her eyes locked on the papers in her mother’s hands. The bruise on her cheek throbbed with every heartbeat, but the physical pain was entirely eclipsed by a sudden, burning curiosity.
"What ledger, Mother?" Elena demanded, her voice echoing off the high ceilings. "What did Dad hide before he died?"
Eleanor crumpled the top page reflexively, her knuckles turning white. She spun around, attempting to regain her authoritative posture, but the panic in her eyes betrayed her.
"It’s nothing that concerns you," Eleanor snapped, marching toward the study. "Go clean your face. Marcus is waiting inside to finish the transfer paperwork."
"No," Elena said, stepping squarely into her mother’s path. She stood her ground, refusing to budge an inch, drawing on a hidden reservoir of strength she didn't know she possessed. "I’m not signing anything, and I’m not playing your games anymore. You and Marcus are hiding something massive. That ledger... it’s the real reason you’ve been bleeding me dry, isn’t it?"
From the dark hallway behind them, Marcus stepped out of the kitchen. He was holding a glass of amber whiskey, swirling the liquid slowly as he watched the confrontation unfold with detached amusement.
"Let her see it, Eleanor," Marcus said smoothly, taking a slow sip. "She’s going to find out anyway. The federal auditors are already looking at the retirement accounts tied to the base logistics contracts from twenty years ago."
Eleanor shot a murderous glare at Marcus, her jaw clenching so hard her teeth ground audibly. "You told her?"
"I didn't have to," Marcus replied, smiling faintly. "The digital paper trail is public record now. Every dollar your husband skimmed from the supply lines was funneled into a blind trust under Elena’s maiden name."
Elena staggered back as if she had been physically struck a second time. Her father—the man she had worshipped as an honorable soldier—had used her identity to stash embezzled military funds?
"That's a lie," Elena whispered, shaking her head in frantic denial. "My dad was an honest man."

Eleanor let out a bitter, humorless laugh, tossing the manila envelope onto the floor between them. "Honorable? He was a thief, Elena. And now the Department of Defense wants every single penny back—starting with your home."
