Chapter 12 - The Field Office

The fluorescent lights of the federal field office hummed with a sterile, unrelenting buzz. Elena sat alone in a small, windowless interrogation room across a scarred metal table. The dark bruise on her cheek had swollen slightly, purplish and tender against her pale skin, but she hadn't touched it once. In front of her sat a single white paper cup of lukewarm water, untouched.

The heavy steel door swung open, and the lead investigator walked in, carrying a thick manila folder stamped with red classification markings. He took a seat across from her, resting the folder on the table before looking up with a look of grudging professional respect.

"Your cloud backup cleared every technical hurdle we had, Mrs. Vance," the investigator said, opening the folder to reveal dozens of digital transaction logs. "The decryption keys on that flash drive unlocked the entire offshore network. Your husband’s shell companies have been frozen, and your mother’s military pension has been officially seized pending a court-martial review."

Elena stared at the water cup, her reflection shimmering faintly on the liquid's surface. "What happens to me?"

"Legally, your signature was forged on three key asset transfers, and your social security number was used without your informed consent," the investigator replied, leaning back in his chair. "Our legal team has reviewed your financial footprint from the last ten years. You were isolated, manipulated, and financially abused by both Colonel Vance and Mr. Vance. You are officially cleared of all criminal charges."

Elena let out a long, slow breath that she felt like she had been holding for an eternity. The crushing weight that had pressed down on her chest since the first strike of the saber finally began to lift.

"And Marcus?" Elena asked quietly.

"Federal indictment on eleven counts of wire fraud, embezzlement, and conspiracy," the investigator said without missing a beat. "He’s looking at twenty years minimum, with no possibility of parole. His offshore accounts were seized under the Patriot Act ten minutes ago. He walked away with absolutely nothing."

The door behind the investigator clicked open again, and a female federal marshal stepped inside, holding a cardboard box containing the few personal items recovered from the house—Elena’s wallet, her car keys, and the heavy brass key to the front door that she would never use again.

"Your car is parked in the visitor lot, Mrs. Vance," the marshal said softly, placing the box on the table. "You're free to go."
