Chapter 10 - The Cold Metal

The heavy brass hilt of the ceremonial saber felt surprisingly natural in Elena’s hand as she slowly stood up from the floor. The sharp, authoritative tone in her voice commanded the entire room, drawing the stunned gaze of both Marcus and the desperate courier. The years of living under her mother’s strict military rule had finally taught her one undeniable lesson: in a war zone, hesitation equals death.
"I said, put the drive on the table," Elena repeated, her arm extending firmly, pointing the tip of the scabbarded saber toward the center mahogany table.
The courier blinked, momentarily paralyzed by the sudden shift in power. He looked at the heavy blade, then up at Elena’s tear-streaked, bruised face, which now wore an expression of terrifying, unyielding resolve. Realizing she wasn't bluffing, the young man slowly reached out and tossed the silver flash drive onto the wooden tabletop. It slid across the polished surface before coming to a complete stop right next to the brass key.
Marcus’s eyes lit up with predatory greed. Before the courier could react, Marcus lunged forward, his hand clawing across the table to grab the flash drive.
"Don't move," Elena snapped.
With a swift, practiced motion that mirrored her mother’s military precision, Elena brought the flat of the saber down hard onto the table, missing Marcus’s fingers by a fraction of an inch. The loud crack of the metal against wood vibrated through the room, echoing off the high ceilings like a gunshot.
Marcus jerked his hand back with a sharp gasp, stumbling backward against the sofa. "Have you lost your mind? That drive is our only way out of this!"
"It's my way out," Elena corrected, her voice ice-cold. She stepped forward, scooped up the flash drive, and slipped it securely into the pocket of her dark trousers. "You traded me to the feds, Marcus. You recorded my humiliation, you helped my mother drain my father's estate, and you built a criminal enterprise on my back. We are done."
The courier watched the exchange with wide eyes, backing slowly toward the shattered patio door. "Look, lady, I don't want any trouble with the feds. Just make sure they get the decryption keys or we're all going down."
Before Elena could answer, the front door rattled violently. The heavy oak panels burst open as federal marshals poured into the entryway, weapons drawn, shouting commands for everyone to get on the floor.
"FBI! Nobody move! Drop your weapons!"
May you like
Elena didn't drop the saber. Instead, she stood tall in the center of the living room, staring directly down the barrel of the lead agent's service weapon as the room descended into absolute chaos.
