Chapter 7 - The Silver Cuffs

The metallic click of the handcuffs echoing through the foyer felt like the final nail in the coffin of the Vance family dynasty. Eleanor did not resist. Decades of strict military protocol had drilled into her that an order, no matter how humiliating, must be accepted with posture and silence. As the federal agents led her toward the open doorway, her gray-bunned head remained held high, though her eyes betrayed a bitter, burning defeat.
Elena remained on her knees on the Persian rug, clutching the incriminating financial documents against her chest. The bruise on her cheek throbbed with a dull, persistent heat. She watched her mother pass by without a word passing between them. There were no tearful goodbyes, no sudden pleas for forgiveness—just the cold, unyielding mechanics of justice catching up to a lifetime of hidden sins.
Marcus stood by the mahogany staircase, watching the procession with his hands comfortably tucked into the pockets of his dark gray knit sweater. He looked like an outside observer at a museum exhibit rather than a man whose wife of ten years had just had her entire life dismantled.
As the last federal agent stepped out onto the porch, pulling the heavy oak door halfway shut behind him, Marcus turned his attention back to Elena.
"You should probably pack a bag," Marcus said evenly, his tone conversational. "The marshals are securing the perimeter, but they gave me twenty minutes to clear out the primary living quarters before the official seal goes on the front door."
Elena slowly rose to her feet, her legs shaking under the sudden surge of adrenaline and shock. She walked over to Marcus, stopping just inches away from him. Up close, the absence of any remorse in his light-brown eyes was chilling.
"You planned this from the very beginning," Elena said, her voice dropping to a harsh, trembling whisper. "You didn't just stumble into my life. You targeted me because of the trust fund."
Marcus offered a thin, polite smile that failed to reach his eyes. "Smart girl. It took you longer than I expected to figure it out, but yes. A corporate restructuring specialist knows how to read an unrecorded ledger better than a grieving daughter."
"I loved you," Elena breathed, the words tasting like ash on her tongue.
"Love is an inefficient asset class, Elena," Marcus replied smoothly, turning toward the stairs. "Now, if you'll excuse me, I have an appointment with my attorney to finalize the fast-track divorce. My assets are safely in a separate offshore entity, which means I walk away clean."

Before Marcus could take his first step up the stairs, a heavy knock rattled the back patio glass door, accompanied by the muffled shouting of someone demanding entry from the kitchen.
