Chapter 11 - The Federal Sweep

The blinding flashlights of the federal marshals cut through the dimly lit living room, casting chaotic white shadows against the walls. Shouts echoed from every corner as agents flooded the space, forcing the courier to the floor with a heavy thud and slapping plastic zip-ties around his wrists.
"Stay down! Hands behind your back!" a federal agent bellowed, pinning Marcus face-down against the Persian rug right beside the scattered legal papers.
Marcus struggled frantically against the restraints, his face pressed into the dusty wool. "You're making a mistake! I’m the whistleblower! I’m the one who provided the initial data dump!"
Elena stood completely still in the center of the room, the ceremonial saber held loosely in her right hand, its brass hilt gleaming under the harsh overhead lights. She didn't drop to her knees. She didn't cry. The transformation that had begun with a physical strike to her cheek was now complete; the fearful, subservient daughter had vanished entirely.
The lead investigator, a tall man with sharp gray temples and a cold, analytical gaze, stepped past the struggling Marcus and stopped right in front of Elena. He looked down at the saber in her hand, then up at the dark bruise blooming across her cheekbone.
"Mrs. Vance, I presume?" the investigator asked, his voice low and professional.
"I am Elena Vance," she replied, her voice steady and entirely devoid of fear. "And I have something you've been looking for."
With slow, deliberate movements, Elena reached into her trouser pocket and pulled out the small silver flash drive. She held it out on the flat of her palm, presenting it to the federal agent like an offering of truce—or an executioner's bill.
"This contains the master encryption keys to thirty million dollars in embezzled defense funds," Elena stated clearly, her eyes locked onto the investigator's. "My husband built the shell companies. My mother managed the logistics. And I have the complete unedited audit logs proving my non-involvement, which were automatically backed up to my personal cloud storage ten minutes ago."
Marcus thrashed against the floor ties, his voice frantic and desperate. "Don't listen to her! She's lying! She signed every document!"
The lead investigator took the flash drive from Elena’s hand, slipping it into an evidence pouch without breaking eye contact. He signaled two agents to lift Marcus off the floor.

"We'll verify everything in processing, Mr. Vance," the investigator said smoothly, before turning back to Elena. "You'll need to come down to the field office for a formal statement, Mrs. Vance. But considering the contents of this drive, you may not be returning as a suspect."
