Chapter 1 - The First Strike

The brass hilt of the ceremonial saber felt heavy, cold, and entirely unforgiving against the palm of Eleanor Vance’s hand. At sixty years old, her gray hair was pulled back into a severe military bun, every strand lacquered into submission. Her pressed uniform bore decades of unyielding discipline, a testament to a career spent commanding logistics battalions where weakness was treated as a structural failure. Inside the quiet living room of the family estate, the atmosphere was suffocating.
Elena, her forty-year-old daughter, knelt on the Persian rug, her ivory blouse stained with the dust of the floorboards. Her dark, shoulder-length hair fell over her face as she shook from the sudden impact. The flat of the saber had just cracked across her cheek, leaving a dull, stinging welt.
Eleanor stared down, her voice a sharp, rhythmic whip that cut through the silence.
"Five thousand more..."
Elena lifted her tear-streaked face, her breathing ragged, refusing to accept the latest financial demand levied against her household.
"No. Not another dollar."
Eleanor’s expression tightened into something even more terrifyingly absolute.
"...for the gala."
A few feet away, standing near the bottom of the mahogany staircase, Marcus watched the entire exchange through the glowing screen of his smartphone. At thirty-five, with light-brown hair and a dark gray knit sweater, he looked less like a husband and more like an indifferent auditor recording a quarterly loss. He was actively filming the humiliation, his thumb scrolling through notifications.
Eleanor did not hesitate. With a practiced, dismissive flick of her wrist, she brought the saber down a second time, the heavy metal striking the side table with a resounding crash that rattled the family crest hanging on the wall.
Elena scrambled back, tears streaming hot and fast down her bruised face. She looked up at Marcus, the man she had shared a bed and a life with for over a decade, her heart shattering into jagged pieces.
"You really just gonna stand there?" she hissed, her voice trembling with a mixture of grief and pure fury. "You watched her hit me. You stopped being my husband tonight."
Marcus didn't lower his phone. Instead, he tilted the screen slightly to capture her raw, breaking expression in high definition, completely devoid of empathy.

"Be careful how you speak to your mother, Elena," Marcus replied smoothly, his voice devoid of warmth. "She’s just liquidating your inheritance before the audit hits."
