Chapter 6 - The Heavy Boots

The rhythmic crunch of heavy boots grew louder, stopping directly outside the front double doors. A sharp, authoritative knock rattled the stained-glass panels, followed by a deep voice booming through the intercom.

"Open the door! Department of Defense Criminal Investigation Division. Open up immediately!"

Eleanor stood frozen for a split second, her decades of military conditioning warring with the stark reality of her impending disgrace. She smoothed the front of her uniform jacket instinctively, her chin rising out of sheer habit. But the silver hair framing her face was damp with cold sweat.

"Don't open it," Elena whispered from her spot on the floor, clutching the financial papers to her chest like a shield. "If we open that door, it’s over."

Marcus didn't panic. He calmly walked over to the entryway table, picked up his smartphone, and tapped the screen a few times. A soft digital chime indicated that a file had just been uploaded to a secure external server.

"It's already over, Elena," Marcus said without looking up from his phone. "I’ve uploaded the complete audit trail and the signed asset-transfer deeds to the investigator's public portal. Legally, I’m cooperating as a whistleblower. Which means I’m fully shielded from prosecution."

Elena stared at him, her breath hitching in her throat. "You... you turned us in? You traded us for immunity?"

"I traded nothing," Marcus replied coldly, slipping his phone into his pocket. "I simply recognized a sinking ship and bought a seat on the lifeboat."

The pounding on the door grew more violent. A federal marshal’s voice echoed through the house, warning that they would force entry if the door wasn't unlatched within ten seconds.

Eleanor finally moved. With a sharp, commanding stride, she bypassed Marcus and unlocked the deadbolt herself. She swung the heavy oak door wide open, revealing three armed military investigators in crisp uniforms standing under the porch light, flanked by two federal agents in dark suits.

"Colonel Eleanor Vance?" the lead investigator asked, his voice crisp and emotionless.

Eleanor stood at attention, her spine rigid, her hands clasped tightly behind her back. "I am Colonel Vance. State your business."

"You are under arrest for military embezzlement, obstruction of justice, and conspiracy to commit wire fraud," the investigator stated, stepping across the threshold with a pair of steel handcuffs gleaming in his hand. "And you are required to surrender all military decorations and service sabers immediately."

Elena watched from the floor as the cold steel cuffs snapped around her mother’s wrists with a metallic click.
