Chapter 14 - The Unknown Number

The sharp vibration of the smartphone on the passenger seat cut through the peaceful rhythm of the ocean waves. Elena stared at the glowing screen in the darkened car cabin. The incoming text message displayed an unknown, unformatted number, accompanied by a single, chilling attachment: a short, high-definition video file.

Her breath caught in her throat. She hesitated for three agonizing seconds before reaching over and tapping the screen to play the video.

The footage opened inside the dimly lit living room of the family estate—the exact living room that was currently sealed behind federal crime scene tape. In the video, filmed from a low angle near the mahogany staircase, Eleanor Vance stood tall in her military uniform, bringing the ceremonial saber down across Elena’s face with cold precision. The audio captured the exact phrasing of the original nightmare:

"Five thousand more... for the gala."

Elena’s hands began to shake. How was this possible? The federal marshals had seized all of Marcus's devices, and the original recording devices had been confiscated as evidence. Who had sent this?

As the video continued to play past the point where the federal raid had interrupted them, the camera angle shifted. A shadow detached itself from the hallway corner—a figure that neither Elena, nor Marcus, nor the federal investigators had noticed hiding in the shadows during the chaos.

The figure stepped into the light of the video frame, revealing a face Elena hadn't seen in over fifteen years. It was her younger brother, David—the sibling who had supposedly died in a training accident twenty years ago, the tragedy that had supposedly driven their father to embezzlement and their mother to absolute tyranny.

David looked directly into the camera lens, his expression a terrifying mirror of their mother's strict, unyielding stare. Then, the video cut to black, followed by a single text message typed in all capital letters beneath the file:

"THE AUDIT ISN'T OVER, SISTER. MOTHER LEFT THE REAL LEDGER WITH ME."

Elena stared at the screen, the blood draining completely from her face. David wasn't dead. He had been alive the entire time, pulling the strings from the shadows, using Marcus and Eleanor as pawns in a much larger, darker game of generational revenge.

Before she could process the horrifying implication, her car doors suddenly clicked shut with a synchronized, mechanical thud. All four power windows rolled up simultaneously, locking her inside the cabin.

Elena screamed, slamming her hands against the glass as the car's headlights flickered off, plunging her into absolute, suffocating darkness.
