Chapter 9 - The Rooftop Confrontation

The service elevator lurched upward with a metallic groan, crawling at a agonizingly slow pace toward the hospital’s top floor. Clara gripped the metal handrail inside the cramped car, her fingers pressed tightly against the small black flash drive she had managed to snatch from the control panel.

"What is that?" Agent Vance asked, keeping one hand on his holstered weapon while using the other to steady her against the wall as the car vibrated violently.

"It’s the master decryption key for the off-site cloud server," Clara whispered breathlessly, her heart hammering against her ribs. "I hid it here three days ago when I realized the local network was compromised. Julian and Marcus thought they had every physical drive, but they missed the one right under their noses."

Agent Vance’s eyes widened slightly in realization. "If we plug that into the master communications relay on the helipad control deck before their chopper takes off, we can broadcast the entire trial database directly to every major news outlet in the country simultaneously."

"And bypass the Department of Justice completely," Clara added, a grim determination replacing her despair. "Thomas won't be able to issue a gag order fast enough if the files are distributed via decentralized peer-to-peer nodes."

With a soft ding, the elevator jolted to a sudden halt, and the heavy metal doors slid open.

A blast of freezing nocturnal wind swept across the open-air rooftop helipad, carrying the deafening, rhythmic roar of twin-turbine helicopter blades spinning up to maximum RPM. The heavy black chopper sat in the center of the concrete pad, its navigation lights flashing a hypnotic red and white against the dark skyline.

Julian, Marcus, and Assistant Attorney General Thomas were already ducking beneath the powerful rotor wash, moving swiftly toward the open cabin door of the aircraft.

"Move!" Agent Vance shouted over the deafening roar of the engines, pulling Clara forward out of the elevator vestibule and onto the exposed concrete roof.

The fierce wind tore at Clara’s hair and clothes, making every step a grueling battle against the elements as her injured lower back screamed in protest. She kept her right hand clamped tightly around the flash drive in her pocket, her eyes locked on Julian as he turned around at the top of the aircraft steps.

Julian stopped, shielding his eyes against the ferocious wind, and stared in utter shock as Agent Vance and Clara emerged from the service stairwell.

Thomas looked back over his shoulder, his expression turning venomous as he shouted something to the pilot inside the cockpit. The helicopter’s landing lights flashed brilliantly, blinding them, and the turbine whine pitched sharply upward as the aircraft began to lift off the concrete pad.
