Chapter 3 - The Interruption

The beam of the security guard's flashlight cut through the dim atrium like a laser, sweeping across the spilled oil puddle and illuminating the shattered glass fragments surrounding Clara. Julian reacted with terrifying speed, smoothly standing up and slipping the contaminated syringe back into the deep pocket of his dark suit jacket. His face smoothed into an expression of deep, professional concern as he turned to face the approaching guard.

"Over here! We need immediate medical assistance," Julian called out, his voice carrying the calm, authoritative tone of a senior hospital executive managing an unexpected crisis. "Dr. Evans suffered a severe vertigo episode while transporting a high-priority diagnostic tray. She took a terrible fall down the lower landing."

The guard slowed his pace, eyeing Julian’s expensive suit and then looking down at Clara, who was struggling to prop herself up on her elbows. The guard shined the flashlight directly into Clara’s pale face, making her squint against the harsh glare.

"Ma'am, stay still on the floor," the guard instructed, unhooking the radio from his tactical belt. "I'm calling for an emergency trauma team right now. Don't try to move your legs."

"Don't let him... don't let Julian near my desk," Clara managed to choke out, her voice raspy and desperate as she pointed a trembling finger at the executive. "He has the trial logs. He’s destroying the physical evidence of the pediatric trial failures."

The guard paused, his thumb hovering over the push-to-talk button on his radio. He looked back and forth between Clara’s panicked expression and Julian’s perfectly controlled, mild-mannered demeanor.

"She’s clearly disoriented from the concussion, officer," Julian said smoothly, stepping slightly forward to block the guard’s direct line of sight to Clara’s outstretched hand. "The impact with the marble floor was significant. We should let the professionals handle her diagnosis in the emergency department rather than entertaining conspiracy theories born from oxygen deprivation."

"I am completely lucid," Clara countered, gritting her teeth as she tried to shift her weight. "Check his right suit pocket. The batch twelve data chip and the extraction vials are right there."

Julian didn't flinch, but his fingers instinctively twitched against the fabric of his jacket. The guard narrowed his eyes, stepping closer and resting a gloved hand near his belt.

"Sir, I'm going to need you to empty your pockets and step away from the patient per protocol until the trauma team arrives," the guard ordered, raising his radio to his mouth. "Control, this is Post Four. We have a medical emergency at the grand staircase. Requesting immediate backup and an executive compliance review for potential contamination."

Before the dispatcher’s voice could crackle through the radio speaker, the overhead lights in the entire grand atrium flickered violently twice and then died completely, plunging the massive marble hall into pitch-black darkness.
