Chapter 6 - The Federal Intervention

The harsh, fluorescent brilliance of the restored lighting made the spilled synthetic oil on the marble floor gleam like a freshly polished mirror. Three Federal Marshals in tactical gear fanned out instantly across the grand atrium, their weapons leveled with absolute, unyielding precision.
Julian remained kneeling beside Clara, his hands raised slowly into the air, his face remarkably devoid of panic despite the federal agents bearing down on him.
"Agent Vance," Julian said smoothly, offering a polite, almost mocking nod to the lead investigator who was striding across the marble floor. "You're remarkably early for a routine safety audit. I trust you had no trouble navigating our parking garage."
Agent Vance ignored Julian entirely, keeping his weapon trained on Marcus, who stood half-concealed in the shadows near the base of the grand staircase.
"Marcus Vance—no relation, unfortunately for you—put your hands flat against the stone balustrade right now," Agent Vance ordered, his voice echoing through the massive hall. "You're under arrest for corporate conspiracy, obstruction of justice, and the suppression of critical FDA safety data regarding the pediatric trial failures."
Marcus slowly raised his hands, his face tightening into a bitter scowl, but he offered no resistance as two marshals rushed forward, slamming him against the marble pillar and snapping heavy steel cuffs onto his wrists.
Clara let out a long, ragged breath, her head sinking back against the cool floor as the overwhelming adrenaline finally began to drain from her system.
"Get a medical team over here immediately," Agent Vance barked over his shoulder, finally glancing down at Clara lying in the oil puddle next to the shattered syringes. He knelt beside her, his expression softening slightly. "Dr. Evans, you're safe now. The data you transmitted to our secure drop three hours ago was received in full."
Clara blinked up at him, confusion momentarily overriding her physical agony. "I... I didn't transmit anything. The terminal lock failed before I could finish the upload sequence."
Agent Vance’s brow furrowed slightly. "What are you talking about? The encrypted packet hit our federal server at 11:42 PM, complete with the batch twelve chemical breakdown and the executive sign-off logs bearing Julian's digital signature."
Julian let out a soft, low chuckle from where he knelt under the guard of the third marshal. He turned his head slowly, looking directly down at Clara with a chillingly serene smile.
"You really thought we didn't know you were copying those files to an external drive for weeks, Clara?" Julian asked smoothly, his voice laced with patronizing pity. "Marcus and I didn't try to stop you because we needed a scapegoat inside the research division when the FDA finally came knocking."
Agent Vance’s eyes darted back to Julian. "What kind of game are you playing, Julian? You're facing thirty years in a federal penitentiary."
"Am I?" Julian asked softly, tilting his head as the heavy double doors at the entrance of the atrium swung open once again.
A tall man in a tailored gray overcoat stepped through the threshold, holding a heavy leather briefcase and flanked by two high-priced corporate defense attorneys.

"Agent Vance," the newcomer announced calmly, flashing a gold-embossed Department of Justice special credentials badge. "I’m Assistant Attorney General Thomas. I'm taking over this jurisdiction effective immediately. Stand down and release Mr. Vance."
