Chapter 13 - Waking Up

The morning sun filtered softly through the vertical blinds of the secure hospital recovery room, casting warm, golden stripes across the crisp white sheets. Clara blinked sluggishly against the light, a dull, manageable ache replacing the blinding agony that had tortured her spine on the grand marble floor the night before.
Maya looked up instantly from her chair, her eyes red-rimmed and swollen from hours of crying, and rushed to the bedside, gently gripping Clara’s uninjured hand.
"You scared me to death," Maya whispered, her voice cracking with emotion as she pressed her forehead against Clara’s knuckles. "Two federal agents showed up at my apartment in Chicago at 2:00 AM with an armed escort, telling me to pack a bag because my sister had just upended the entire pharmaceutical establishment on national television."
Clara managed a weak, tired smile, squeezing her sister’s fingers. "I'm sorry, Maya. I had to make sure they couldn't reach you to use you as leverage."
"Julian and Marcus are being held without bail at the federal detention center downtown," Maya said, her expression hardening into a fierce resolve as she handed Clara a small cup of water. "And Assistant Attorney General Thomas was arrested at the tarmac trying to board a private flight to the Cayman Islands. It's all over the morning news. Every major network is running the story."
Clara took a slow sip of water, feeling the cool liquid soothe her dry throat. "It's not over yet, Maya. Discovering the data is only the first step. The real fight begins when the corporate legal teams try to bury the class-action lawsuits in endless administrative appeals."
Before Maya could reply, the heavy door of the recovery room clicked open softly.
Agent Vance walked in, wearing a clean suit and carrying a thick manila folder tucked under his arm. He looked tired, dark circles shadowing his eyes, but there was an unmistakable spark of victory in his expression.
"Dr. Evans, I'm glad to see you're finally awake," Agent Vance said respectfully, stopping at the foot of the bed. "The Senate Judiciary Committee just reached out to my director thirty minutes ago. They want you to testify before the congressional oversight subcommittee as the lead whistle-blower next Monday morning."
Clara stared at him, the weight of the request settling heavily on her shoulders. Testifying publicly meant stepping directly into the crosshairs of every remaining corporate loyalist who hadn't yet been arrested.
"If I testify, I’ll be putting a permanent target on my back for every corrupt pharmaceutical conglomerate in the world," Clara said quietly, her voice steady.
"You already have the target on your back, Clara," Vance replied softly, placing the manila folder on the edge of the bed. "The only difference now is that the entire world is watching to make sure no one can touch you in the dark."
Clara opened the folder. Inside were the preliminary deposition transcripts signed by Dr. Sterling, the elderly ethics chair who had survived Julian’s intimidation tactics.

And right underneath Dr. Sterling’s signature was a handwritten note addressed specifically to Clara, bearing a terrifying revelation about the synthetic oil compound she had slipped on.
