Chapter 14 - The Final Revelation

The handwritten note from Dr. Sterling lay open on Clara’s lap, the ink slightly smudged where the elderly physician’s hand had clearly shaken while writing it in the middle of the night.
Clara, the note began in cramped, hurried letters. The spilled oil you encountered on the grand staircase wasn't a random accident or a discarded sample vial. It was a concentrated solvent designed to destroy human tissue upon prolonged skin contact. Julian and Marcus didn't just want to cover up the trial data—they planned to eliminate you quietly before you could reach the lobby.
Clara’s breath hitched in her throat. She looked up at Agent Vance, her eyes wide with sudden horror.
"They weren't just trying to steal the flash drive," Clara whispered, the pieces of the puzzle finally snapping together with terrifying clarity. "The oil puddle... it was a trap. If I hadn't fallen the way I did, or if Julian had successfully injected that vial into my IV line..."
"You would have suffered rapid-onset organ failure within twenty minutes, and the medical examiner would have ruled it an accidental occupational toxicity exposure," Agent Vance finished grimly, stepping closer to the bed. "It was premeditated murder disguised as a workplace accident."
Maya covered her mouth with both hands, a fresh wave of tears spilling down her cheeks as she realized just how close she had come to losing her sister forever.
"Are they still trying to claim immunity?" Clara asked, her voice hardening with cold, righteous fury.
"Thomas tried to cut a deal with the prosecutors an hour ago, throwing Julian and Marcus under the bus in exchange for a reduced sentence," Vance replied, shaking his head. "He claims he was only following executive directives from the corporate board. But Dr. Sterling’s deposition includes audio recordings of Thomas personally authorizing the chemical solvent purchase last month."
Clara closed the manila folder, sliding her legs slowly over the edge of the hospital bed and testing her weight against the floor. Despite a sharp twinge of pain in her lower back, she stood up completely unaided, her posture straight and unyielding.
"Tell the Senate Judiciary Committee I'll testify," Clara said, her voice ringing with absolute authority through the quiet recovery room. "I want every single executive, board member, and corrupt bureaucrat sitting in that congressional hearing room to look me in the eye when I present the pediatric injury logs."
Agent Vance stared at her for a long moment, a slow, respectful smile spreading across his face. He reached out and shook her hand firmly.
"The hearing starts at 9:00 AM sharp on Monday," Vance said. "We'll make sure you have an armored escort all the way to the Capitol steps."
As Vance turned and walked out of the room, leaving Clara and Maya alone to prepare for the monumental battle ahead, the television mounted on the hospital wall flashed with a breaking news banner across the bottom of the screen.
