Chapter 11 - The Ambush

The cold steel barrels of three assault rifles gleamed under the flashing red and white navigation lights of the hovering helicopter. Agent Vance reacted with instinctive training, shoving Clara behind the brick pillar of the utility box and drawing his service weapon in a single fluid motion.
"Federal Agents! Lower your weapons immediately or you will be fired upon!" Vance bellowed over the roar of the rotors, holding his stance with unyielding authority.
The lead contractor, a heavily built man in tactical black gear with a scar across his left cheek, didn't hesitate for a second.
"Drop your badge, Agent. That data broadcast just triggered an automated executive kill-switch on this facility's grid," the contractor snarled, stepping forward with his rifle locked dead on Vance’s chest. "Mr. Thomas’s authority supersedes your jurisdiction. Step away from the terminal box right now."
Inside the helicopter, Assistant Attorney General Thomas stood at the open cabin door, watching the standoff with a cold, detached expression. He pressed a small satellite radio to his ear, listening intently to the frantic reports flooding in from corporate headquarters down below.
"Don't listen to them, Vance!" Clara shouted from behind the brick pillar, her fingers desperately working the emergency manual override switch on the utility box to lock the broadcast server permanently. "If they disconnect that terminal, they can initiate a remote server wipe before the media outlets can mirror the files!"
Julian leaned out of the helicopter door, his face twisted in quiet desperation.
"Kill the uplink, you idiots!" Julian screamed over the deafening turbine noise. "If those files reach the international medical assembly in Geneva by morning, we are all facing federal treason charges!"
The lead contractor took another aggressive step forward, his finger tightening visibly on the trigger of his assault rifle. Agent Vance held his ground, his eyes locked on the gunman's pupils, calculating the precise fraction of a second he had to draw and fire before being hit.
"You pull that trigger, and every federal agency from here to Washington will have your biometric signature logged within five minutes," Vance warned, his voice cutting through the wind with absolute ice. "You're not working for national security anymore. You're cleaning up a mass murder."
The contractor hesitated, his breathing shallow beneath his tactical mask. He glanced back toward Thomas for a final directive.
Thomas’s expression shifted from calculated patience to sheer, unadulterated panic as his satellite phone emitted a high-pitched, continuous error tone.
"Abort! Abort mission immediately!" Thomas screamed, his voice cracking with sudden terror. "The international press pool just mirrored the entire database to the European Union health commission! We've lost control of the grid!"
Before the contractor could process the command, the heavy metal door of the rooftop stairwell burst open a second time, flooding the concrete pad with an entirely different kind of light.

Dozens of flashing blue and red emergency lights illuminated the skyline as three tactical police helicopters descended rapidly from the dark clouds above, surrounding the private chopper on all sides.
