Chapter 4 - The Blackout

The sudden, absolute darkness was suffocating. Only the dim, erratic glow of the security guard’s tactical flashlight cut through the shadows, casting long, monstrous distortions against the towering marble pillars. Clara held her breath, listening intently for the sound of movement across the slick floor.
"Control, do you copy? We’ve lost power in the main lobby," the guard shouted into his radio, but only static hissed in response. "Damn it, the emergency generators should have kicked in instantly."
"Stay calm," Julian’s voice echoed smoothly from somewhere to Clara’s left, though his exact location was impossible to pinpoint in the acoustic maze of the atrium. "The grid switchover always takes a few seconds. There's no need to panic."
Clara slid her hand slowly across the cold marble, searching blindly for a piece of shattered glass or anything she could use to defend herself. Her fingers brushed against the smooth, slippery surface of the oil puddle, and she pulled her hand back with a quiet gasp.
"I know you cut the main breaker, Julian," Clara whispered into the dark, her voice carrying a steely resolve that surprised even herself. "Marcus is already heading to the basement server room to wipe the digital backups, isn't he?"
A soft chuckle broke the heavy silence—not from Julian’s previous location, but from much closer, right near her feet.
"You always were too observant for your own good, Clara," Marcus’s voice murmured, sounding disembodied and chillingly calm in the dark. "If you had just accepted the promotion to the administrative board last month, you'd be sipping champagne in Zurich right now instead of bleeding out on a dirty floor."
Suddenly, the security guard let out a sharp, choked gasp. The beam of the tactical flashlight violently pitched upward, illuminating the ceiling before clattering loudly against the marble floor and rolling away, its light spinning erratically in circles.
Clara heard the heavy thud of a body hitting the stone floor just a few feet away from her.
"What did you do to him?" Clara demanded, terror gripping her chest as she tried to drag her paralyzed lower body backward.
"He’s just unconscious, Clara. We aren't monsters," Julian’s voice replied, sounding entirely too close now. A pair of heavy leather shoes stopped right beside her hip. "We just need your thumbprint to unlock the master terminal on your encrypted tablet, and then this entire unpleasant evening can be put behind us."

A bright, blinding beam of a penlight suddenly clicked on, pointed directly into Clara’s eyes, pinning her in place like an insect under a microscope.
