Chapter 12 - The Net Closes In

The deafening chop of multiple police helicopter rotors created a wall of sound that completely drowned out the wind across the rooftop. Powerful searchlights beamed down from the sky, locking onto the private black chopper and blinding everyone on the concrete pad with brilliant, inescapable illumination.
"This is the Federal Bureau of Investigation! Cut your engines and put your hands on your heads!" a voice boomed from a high-powered loudspeaker mounted on the lead police chopper.
Assistant Attorney General Thomas stumbled backward inside the cabin, dropping his satellite phone as it clattered against the metal floor. His carefully constructed facade of untouchable bureaucratic power shattered instantly, leaving behind a desperate man trapped by his own web of corruption.
Julian grabbed Thomas by the lapels of his gray overcoat, shaking him violently. "Do something! Use your emergency executive clearance! Call the Attorney General's office!"
"The Attorney General just resigned ten minutes ago on live television, you absolute fool!" Thomas shouted back, shoving Julian away with a look of pure hatred. "We’ve been cut loose. The administration is burning every single bridge to save themselves!"
On the concrete deck, the three private contractors lowered their assault rifles slowly, exchanging nervous glances before dropping their weapons to the ground and raising their hands in surrender.
Agent Vance lowered his service weapon, letting out a long, shuddering breath as he turned to check on Clara behind the brick pillar.
"Are you alright?" Vance asked, kneeling beside her and gently helping her slide away from the utility box.
"I'm... I'm holding together," Clara managed to whisper, her face pale and damp with sweat as the agonizing pain in her lower back flared up again. "The broadcast... did it hold?"
"Look at the monitors," Vance pointed toward the rooftop control relay screen.
The progress bar on the utility box terminal flashed a solid, brilliant green. Mirroring complete across 140 nations. International Health Commission subpoena issued.
Julian watched the screen from the open helicopter door, his knees weakening beneath him as the reality of his total defeat settled in. He stepped down onto the concrete pad, his hands trembling as he slowly raised them into the air, offering no resistance as two FBI tactical agents rushed forward and slammed him against the side of the aircraft.
As Marcus was dragged out of the stairwell in handcuffs by local police, and Thomas was led away in disgrace by federal marshals, Clara finally allowed her eyes to close, letting the overwhelming wave of exhaustion pull her under.
When Clara woke up hours later, the sterile white ceiling of a secure hospital recovery room greeted her eyes, accompanied by the gentle, steady beep of a cardiac monitor.

Sitting in a chair beside her bed was Maya, her younger sister from Chicago, holding a warm cup of coffee and crying quietly with relief.
