Chapter 8 - The Vanishing Evidence

The harsh fluorescent light of the atrium seemed to dim as Agent Vance stared down at his phone screen. The frantic voice leaking from the speaker was faint, but Clara could hear the raw panic in her precinct captain's words from across the marble floor.

"Vance, do you copy? The entire evidence room was just hit," the captain shouted over the line. "A federal transport team flashed priority Level One clearance codes fifteen minutes ago and seized every single box from the pediatric trial investigation. They’re gone!"

Agent Vance slowly lowered the phone, his hand trembling slightly with a mixture of rage and profound disbelief. He looked up at Assistant Attorney General Thomas, who was adjusting the cuffs of his crisp white button-down shirt with exasperated patience.

"You raided your own precinct's evidence locker using forged priority codes," Vance said, his voice dangerously low. "That’s a federal felony, Thomas."

"That is called administrative consolidation," Thomas corrected him smoothly, turning to Julian and Marcus with a polite nod. "Gentlemen, I believe our transport vehicle is waiting outside in the ambulance bay. Let’s not keep the board waiting."

Julian flashed Clara a final, triumphant look as he walked past her on the marble floor, his leather shoes clicking rhythmically against the stone. Marcus followed closely behind, flanked by Thomas’s private security detail, leaving no doubt as to who truly held the reins of power in this sprawling medical empire.

Clara watched them leave, a cold numbness settling deep into her bones. Every single door had been locked. Every avenue of justice had been systematically erased before she could even reach it.

"Don't let them go," Clara whispered to Agent Vance, her voice breaking as tears of utter frustration finally spilled over her lashes. "If they get out of this building, those trial logs will be incinerated within the hour, and no one will ever know what happened to those children."

Agent Vance looked down at Clara, his jaw tight as he made a split-second, career-ending decision. He holstered his sidearm, reached down, and placed his strong hands underneath Clara’s arms, hoisting her up despite her sharp cry of pain.

"I can't stop them legally anymore," Vance said quietly, half-carrying her toward the private service elevator hidden behind the grand staircase. "So we're going to break every rule in the book to intercept them at the private helipad on the roof."

Clara leaned her weight against him, wincing with every step as they slipped past the heavy security doors just as Thomas’s entourage rounded the corner toward the main exit.

The service elevator was old, slow, and smelled faintly of industrial cleaning solution, but as the heavy metal doors slid shut, sealing them inside, Clara noticed something glinting on top of the elevator control panel.

It was a small, black flash drive, wedged securely behind the emergency telephone box, bearing a handwritten label in her own handwriting: Maya.
