Chapter 9 - The Alpine Chalet

The black SUV tore through the winding, snow-dusted mountain roads of the Swiss Alps, its headlights cutting through the heavy, swirling fog like twin laser beams. The temperature outside had plummeted well below freezing, frosting the windows of the vehicle with delicate, intricate patterns. In the backseat, Elena Carter sat in total silence, wearing a heavy charcoal winter coat over her sleek red dress, her fingers resting lightly on the clasp of her beige handbag. Beside her, Maya Vance checked the magazine of her suppressed tactical pistol with practiced, methodical precision.
"We’re five minutes out from the perimeter," Maya whispered, peering out the window at the dense pine forests rushing past in the darkness. "Julian’s estate is heavily fortified. Motion sensors, thermal cameras, and at least two patrol units on the perimeter road."
The SUV slowed down, pulling off the main highway onto a secluded, snow-covered gravel track hidden behind a dense thicket of towering fir trees. The driver cut the engine and the headlights instantly, plunging the vehicle into pitch darkness.
"This is as far as I go," the local fixer murmured from the front seat, his eyes darting nervously toward the rearview mirror. "If the guards catch me on this access road, my life isn't worth a franc."
Elena opened the car door, stepping out into the biting alpine wind. The sub-zero air hit her face like physical shrapnel, but she didn't flinch. She adjusted the strap of her beige handbag over her shoulder, checking her footing on the slick, frozen ground.
"Wait here for forty-five minutes," Elena instructed the driver in a calm, authoritative tone. "If we don't return by then, take the backup hard drives straight to the U.S. Embassy in Bern."
Without waiting for a reply, Elena and Maya slipped into the dense treeline, moving with silent, tactical efficiency through the deep snow. Within minutes, they reached the wrought-iron perimeter fence topped with razor wire and high-voltage sensors. Maya pulled a small electronic bypass device from her pocket, attaching it to the control box of the gate. With a soft click, the digital display turned green, and the heavy iron gate swung open soundlessly.
They crept across the manicured, snow-covered lawn toward the sprawling, timber-and-stone alpine chalet that loomed ahead like a fortress against the dark mountain backdrop. Warm amber light bled through the massive floor-to-ceiling windows on the ground floor, where the faint sound of classical piano music drifted softly into the night air.
"Julian is in his private study," Maya whispered, pointing toward the eastern wing of the chalet. "Patrol guard approaching from the west terrace. Move!"
May you like
Elena didn't hesitate. She darted forward, her dark coat swirling around her ankles as she slipped beneath the shadow of a stone balcony just as the heavy footsteps of the armed guard crunched heavily on the gravel path mere feet away.
