Chapter 5 - The Federal Trap

The sterile, mechanical voice echoing from the satellite phone sent a visible shudder through Arthur Sterling. His knees seemed to weaken, and he gripped the edge of the stone terrace railing for support. The city lights below blurred into a chaotic smear of neon and shadow as the reality of his impending ruin fully set in.

"Federal Marshal Vance?" Arthur choked out, his eyes darting frantically between Elena and the blinking red light on the handheld device. "Maya... Maya works for me. She’s my chief of operations. She report directly to—"

"To the Department of Justice’s Internal Affairs division, Arthur," a crisp, authoritative male voice interrupted from the speakerphone. Federal Marshal Marcus Vance stepped out from the shadows of the interior hallway, flanked by two armed federal agents in tactical vests. Maya Vance followed closely behind them, no longer wearing the terrified victim persona, but instead wearing a sharp, federal badge clipped securely to the lapel of her beige cropped blazer.

Arthur stood completely paralyzed. The pieces of the puzzle clicked together in his mind with devastating clarity. The lobby struggle, the planted handbag, the staged confrontation—it had all been an elaborate, perfectly executed sting operation designed to draw Arthur out into the open and force him into a verbal confession.

"You... you set me up," Arthur whispered, staring at Maya with a look of absolute betrayal. "All of it. The corporate takeover, the board votes, the penthouse... it was all bait."

Maya looked at her former boss with cold, professional indifference. She reached into her beige handbag and pulled out a pair of polished steel handcuffs, holding them out as she stepped forward.

"You embezzled forty million dollars from employee retirement funds, Arthur, and you conspired to commit corporate homicide," Maya said clearly, her voice echoing off the high glass ceilings. "You’re under arrest."

Arthur looked desperately toward the open terrace doors, calculating the distance to the edge, but the federal agents moved in with military precision, blocking every possible exit route. His chest heaved as panic finally overwhelmed his sophisticated corporate exterior. He opened his mouth to speak, to demand a lawyer, to threaten them with his political connections, but the words caught in his throat.

Elena watched him quietly, the tension finally draining from her shoulders. She slipped the encrypted flash drive back into her handbag and adjusted her gold bracelet. The quest for vengeance that had consumed her every waking moment for the past six months was finally reaching its climax. But as the federal agents slapped the handcuffs onto Arthur’s wrists and read him his constitutional rights, a cold, heavy realization settled into Elena’s mind. Locking Arthur away didn't bring her father back. It didn't heal the void left in her heart.

Arthur was pushed toward the private elevator, his head bowed in absolute defeat. As he passed Elena, he stopped for a fraction of a second, lifting his gaze to meet hers with a sinister, cryptic smirk.

"You think I worked alone, Elena?" Arthur whispered softly, just loud enough for her to hear over the hum of the elevator motors. "Check the offshore accounts again. Your father wasn't the only one who had a secret partner."
