Chapter 7 - The Call from the Past

The shrill ringing of the satellite phone cut through the heavy silence of the penthouse like a razor blade. Elena stared down at the flashing red light on the device, her hands trembling slightly as the full weight of Maya's discovery crashed down upon her. Uncle Julian. The man she had mourned as a corporate outcast, the gentle uncle who used to smuggle her sweets when she was a little girl, was apparently the silent mastermind behind the entire catastrophe.

"Answer it," Maya whispered urgently, stepping closer with her hand resting on the grip of her concealed sidearm. "It could be the field office calling about Arthur’s transport."

Elena reached out, her fingers brushing against the cold plastic casing of the phone. She pressed the accept button and brought the device slowly to her ear.

"This is Elena Carter," she said, her voice steadying through sheer force of will.

For a moment, there was only the faint hiss of static over the encrypted satellite frequency. Then, a slow, familiar chuckle echoed through the earpiece—a rich, baritone laugh that sent a chilling wave of nostalgia and absolute horror straight down Elena’s spine.

"Hello, my dear niece," Uncle Julian’s voice purred smoothly from across the Atlantic. It sounded as calm and unhurried as if they were discussing Sunday brunch, completely detached from the fact that federal agents had just arrested his co-conspirator. "I must congratulate you. Taking down Arthur single-handedly in the hotel lobby? Your mother’s fiery spirit truly lives on inside you. Though, you always did lack patience."

Elena’s grip on the phone tightened until her knuckles turned stark white. She stepped out onto the open terrace, staring up at the sprawling, starless night sky.

"You killed my father, Julian," Elena said, her voice dropping into a harsh, venomous whisper. "You used Arthur as a pawn, you embezzled the pension funds, and you sabotaged his car. You destroyed everything he built."

Julian sighed deeply on the other end of the line, sounding genuinely disappointed, like a stern schoolmaster correcting a misbehaving child.

"Such a melodramatic perspective, Elena. Your father was a visionary, yes, but he was blind to the modern realities of global finance. He wanted to keep Carter Enterprises chained to the past, refusing to modernize, refusing to adapt to the new digital economy," Julian replied, his tone hardening just a fraction. "I merely accelerated a transition that was fundamentally inevitable. And as for Arthur... well, every good chess player knows that pawns are meant to be sacrificed when the queen makes her move."

"You won't get away with this," Elena countered fiercely, her eyes scanning the glittering skyline below. "The federal marshals have Arthur. He’s already singing. It’s only a matter of hours before an international warrant is issued for your arrest."

Julian laughed again, a sharper, more arrogant sound this time.

"Let him sing, my dear. Arthur knows nothing about my current operations. By the time your precious federal marshals process his paperwork, I will have transferred the remaining assets out of the jurisdiction and into the decentralized crypto reserves," Julian said smoothly. "And if you want to stop me... you’ll have to find me first."

Before Elena could utter another word, the line went dead with a sharp click, leaving only the deafening hum of the empty satellite connection.
